Geological Features
Geological features and formations are an important element to our natural world telling us a lot about history and how the landscape came to be what it is today. Much like the rest of Northern Ontario, our park has some unique features that you can identify by using the information we have provided below. Do you know what an erratic is? We have many erratics deposited about the park ranging from average to extremely large in size. Come visit our park to discover what they look like!
Rock outcroppings show two different and distinct paths of glaciation over the last one million years. These markings on exposed rocky areas are called Striations. In sections of the JKMP all of the topsoil was removed and deposited in other areas, leaving exposed granite outcroppings.
Elsewhere in the park are massive boulders that were left behind as the glacier melted. These isolated rocks are called Erratics.
There is also much evidence of erosion along the creek in the central portion of the park. In some areas, the creek bed is over 10 metres lower than the surrounding topography.
